# Document tabs A document can hold several tabs. They exist for one problem: a piece of content usually comes with material that belongs to it but must never be published with it, such as the brief, the research, the outline or a list of sources. Tabs keep that material beside the copy without it reaching your site. ## The rule that matters **Exactly one tab syncs to WordPress.** The rest live only in Workover. So a document can look like this: - **Article**, the synced tab that becomes the post - Brief - Research - Screenshots to take When you push, only the synced tab goes, wherever it sits in the list. The other tabs are invisible to WordPress and to anyone reading your site. By default the synced tab is the document’s original body. When you add the first extra tab, the text you already had stays in a tab named after the document, and that tab remains the synced one even if you move it down the list. ## Before you start You need the editor or owner role on the document. Viewers and commenters do not see the tab menu. ## Open the tabs rail Tabs live in the **Document tabs** rail on the left of the document. Select **Tabs** at the start of the toolbar to open or close it. ## Add, rename and arrange tabs - **Add a tab:** select **+** (**Add tab**) at the top of the rail. - **Rename a tab:** double-click its name, or open its **Tab options** menu (**⋮**) and select **Rename**. - **Reorder tabs:** drag a tab up or down the rail. You can also use **Move up** and **Move down** in **Tab options**. - **Nest a tab:** open **Tab options** and select **Add subtab** to create a new tab inside it, or **Move into** to put an existing tab under another. Nesting goes one level deep. Clicking a tab opens it, or shows and hides its outline. **Tab options** also has **Duplicate**, **Choose emoji**, **Show outline**, **Copy link** and **Delete**. ## Delete a tab > **Warning:** Deleting a tab deletes its content immediately, with no confirmation, and version history cannot bring it back. Copy anything you want to keep into another tab first. 1. Open **Tab options** (**⋮**) on the tab. 2. Select **Delete**. If the tab had subtabs, they are kept and move up a level. You cannot delete the synced tab. In its **Tab options** the item reads **Delete (WP tab)** on a document linked to WordPress, or **Delete (main tab)** otherwise, and is unavailable. To delete it, first make another tab the synced one. **Delete** only appears when the document has more than one tab. ## Choose which tab syncs to WordPress If you drafted in another tab and want that one to be what publishes, make it the synced tab. This option only appears on a document that is already linked to a WordPress post. 1. Open **Tab options** (**⋮**) on the tab you want to publish. 2. Select **Sync this tab to WordPress**. A link icon (**Synced to WordPress**) marks the synced tab in the rail. Changing which tab syncs does not push anything on its own. The next push sends the newly chosen tab. ## Related - [Editor basics](/docs/editor-basics/) - [How to push a document to WordPress](/docs/pushing-to-wordpress/) - [Version history](/docs/version-history/)
