# How to suggest edits Suggesting mode records your edits as tracked changes instead of applying them. Use it when you want to fix a sentence yourself but leave the final decision to the document’s owner or another editor. Each insertion and deletion carries your name, and none of them takes effect until someone accepts it. **Before you start:** you need the editor or owner role on the document. Commenters and viewers cannot suggest. A commenter can leave a comment instead. See [Comments and suggestions](/docs/comments-and-suggestions/). ## Turn on Suggesting mode 1. Open the document. 2. Select **Edit panel** in the toolbar. 3. At the top of the panel, open **Mode** and select **Suggesting**. 4. Type, delete and replace text as usual. Typing, deleting, typing over a selection and pasting are recorded as suggestions. Some edits are not tracked and apply straight away, even in Suggesting mode: formatting such as bold or headings, splitting a paragraph with Enter, changing a list, dragging text, and the **Improve**, **Shorten**, **Expand** and **Fix grammar** rewrites in the selection bubble. While there are pending suggestions, a number beside **Mode** shows how many. > **Warning:** With the Edit panel closed, nothing on screen shows that you are in Suggesting mode. If your typing keeps appearing as tracked changes, open the Edit panel and set **Mode** back to **Editing**. ## How the mode is remembered The mode is saved per document and per browser. When you come back to the same document in the same browser, it opens in the mode you left it in. Your choice does not change the mode for anyone else, and another browser or device starts in **Editing**. ## The three modes | Mode | What your typing does | | --- | --- | | **Editing** | Changes the document directly | | **Suggesting** | Records tracked changes for someone to accept or reject | | **Viewing** | Nothing: the document is read-only for you | If you cannot edit the document, as a commenter or viewer, **Mode** shows **Viewing** and cannot be changed. ## Review and accept suggestions When a document has suggestions, editors see a review list at the top of the document with the number of changes and who made them. 1. Scroll to the top of the document to find the review list. 2. For each change, select **Accept** (✓) or **Reject** (✗). Selecting a change in the list jumps to it in the text. 3. To handle everything at once, select **Accept all** or **Reject all**. ## Suggestions block publishing You cannot push a document to WordPress while it has suggestions. The push controls on the Edit panel’s **WP** tab are disabled and say why: publishing would put the tracked changes, including text marked for removal, on the live site. Accept or reject every suggestion first. ## Related - [Comments and suggestions](/docs/comments-and-suggestions/) - [Editor basics](/docs/editor-basics/) - [Keyboard shortcuts and slash commands](/docs/keyboard-shortcuts-and-slash-commands/) - [Roles and permissions](/docs/roles-and-permissions/)
