Choose who provides Workover AI
Every Workover AI feature runs on a provider your workspace chooses: drafting, revising, style checks, screenshots and documentation review. Until you choose one, AI does not work, and a draft fails with “No AI key connected. Add one in Settings → AI to use Workover AI.” This page shows how to set the provider, and what each choice means.
Before you start: only a workspace owner or admin can change AI settings. Other members can see the page but cannot save changes.
The two options
| Option | Who pays for model calls | What you set up |
|---|---|---|
| Workover AI | Included in your plan | Nothing. Available on a paid plan. |
| Your own key | Your account with the AI provider | A provider, a model and an API key |
Use Workover AI
- Go to Settings > AI.
- In Who provides the AI, select Workover AI.
The option is marked Current once it is selected. If it shows “Included with a paid plan. Subscribe to switch to it.”, the workspace needs a paid plan first. See Plans and pricing.
If the Who provides the AI card does not appear, Workover AI is not offered for your workspace. Use your own key instead.
Use your own key
- Go to Settings > AI.
- If the Who provides the AI card is shown, select Your own key.
- In Model & key, choose a Provider.
- Choose a Model. Choosing a provider fills in its default model.
- Paste your key into API key.
- Select Save. Key connected appears under the field.
Warning: If you switch from Workover AI to Your own key without adding a key, AI stops working in the workspace until a key is saved.
Your key is encrypted and never shown again. To replace it, paste a new key into API key and save.
With your own key, the AI usage card on the same page shows how many actions and tokens Workover used over the last 30 days, and which features they went to. Your provider’s console has the actual bill.
Which provider to choose
The main difference between providers is whether they can read a code repository linked to your project, which is what lets technical drafts be written from your code.
| Provider | Reads a linked repository? |
|---|---|
| Anthropic (Claude) | Yes, on GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket. On GitHub and GitLab, the model reads the repository on the host, and your source code does not pass through Workover. On Bitbucket, Workover fetches the files a draft needs and passes them to the model. |
| GLM Coding Plan (Z.ai) | Yes, on GitHub and Bitbucket, not on GitLab. Workover fetches the files a draft needs and passes them to the model. |
| OpenRouter | No. Drafts are written from the prompt only. |
| OpenAI | No. Drafts are written from the prompt only. |
See Grounding drafts in your code repository.
Add a second key for drafts that read your code
Drafts that read your repository are the most expensive calls Workover makes. You can run everything else on a cheaper provider and keep a separate key only for work that reads your code: grounded drafts and document checks against the repository.
- In Model & key, choose a provider other than Anthropic (Claude). A Reading your GitHub repo (optional) section appears.
- In that section, choose a Provider and Model, and paste its API key. On GitHub and GitLab, an Anthropic key keeps your source code on the host when the model reads it.
- Select Save. The second key shows Used for grounded drafts only.
Everything else keeps running on the first provider, including revisions made with Iterate.
What else is on the AI settings page
- AI features: optional features that are off until you turn them on, such as the Documentation reviewer and Changelog drafts from merges. See Documentation review.
- Learning from your edits: whether Workover keeps the text of suggestions you accept or reject (Keep the text I edited), for 90 days.
- What Workover AI has learned: rules Workover inferred from your feedback on suggestions, for example when you ask for the same change twice. See Style guides.
Troubleshooting
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| No AI key connected. Add one in Settings → AI to use Workover AI. | No provider is set up. Follow the steps above. |
| Only a workspace owner or admin can change AI settings. | Ask a workspace owner or admin to make the change. |
| Workover AI is included with a paid plan. Subscribe to switch to it. | Upgrade the workspace, or use your own key. |
| Workover AI is temporarily unavailable for this workspace. We have been notified. | The problem is on Workover’s side. Try again later, or switch to your own key. |
| Grounding needs a provider that can read your repository… | Your provider cannot read repositories on this code host. Choose a provider that can (see the table above), or add a second key for grounded drafts. |
