How Workover AI works
Workover AI writes first drafts, revises documents you already have, checks them against your style guide, and can add screenshots of your own product. This page explains what it needs, where each part lives, and which of its changes you review before they take effect.
What Workover AI needs first
AI needs a provider, and nothing works until one is chosen. A workspace owner or admin sets it under Settings > AI, in the Who provides the AI card:
- Workover AI: included with a paid plan, with nothing to set up.
- Your own key: model calls bill to your own provider account, and you choose the provider and model.
Without a provider, a draft fails as soon as you submit it. See Choose who provides Workover AI.
| You need | Why | Where |
|---|---|---|
| An AI provider | Every AI action runs through it | Settings > AI |
| Workspace membership | Guests (people who opened a shared document) cannot use AI | Settings > Members |
| A repository linked to the project (optional) | Lets technical drafts be written from your code | Project settings > Linked repositories |
| An app connection (optional) | Lets drafts include screenshots of your product | Settings > Integrations > Screenshots |
Where you use it
Drafting a new document. Describe the document in the prompt box on your workspace home and select Draft it, or open the New document page at /app/new to choose the workspace and project first. Every draft runs in the background: the Drafting tray on the workspace home shows its progress, you can close the tab, and you get a “Your AI draft is ready” notification when it finishes. Workover creates the document when the draft is done. See Draft a document with Workover AI.
Revising a document. Open the document, select Edit panel in the document toolbar, then the AI tab (the arrow-pointer icon). It has three parts: Iterate to ask for a change, Check to check the document against your style guide, and Rules to manage the project’s style rules. See Revising a document with AI.
Rewriting a selection. Select text and the menu offers Improve, Shorten, Expand and Fix grammar. These replace the selected text directly.
Reviewing documentation. Projects that hold product documentation have a Review page that checks published articles against your product. See Documentation review.
From the command line. The Workover CLI can draft documents, retake a document’s screenshots (workover doc reshoot) and check a document against its linked repository (workover doc verify). See CLI commands and MCP tools.
What it works from
- Your brief. Text you type, and up to 4 images pasted into the prompt box on your workspace home. See Writing a good brief.
- Your style guide, at workspace and project level. Every draft and revision follows it. See Style guides.
- Your code, when a repository is linked to the project and your provider can read repositories. With your own key, Anthropic (Claude) can on GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket, GLM Coding Plan (Z.ai) can on GitHub and Bitbucket, and OpenRouter and OpenAI cannot. See Grounding drafts in your code repository.
- Screenshots of your product, when an app is connected. See Product screenshots in drafts.
When a draft could not be checked against your code, Workover shows a banner on it saying so, for example “Not grounded in your code.” Read a draft like that as written from the brief and the model’s general knowledge, and check its details.
Suggestions and direct edits
Not every AI action works the same way, and the difference decides whether you review a change before it lands:
| Action | How the change arrives |
|---|---|
| Iterate in the AI tab | Tracked suggestions. Nothing changes until you accept. |
| Suggest fix on a style check | A tracked suggestion |
| Improve, Shorten, Expand, Fix grammar on a selection | Replaces the selected text directly, with no suggestion to review, even in Suggesting mode |
| A new draft | A new document |
workover doc reshoot and workover doc verify | Suggestions by default, or direct edits with --write |
You review suggestions from the bar above the document, with Accept all, Reject all, or one at a time. See Comments and suggestions.
Workover AI does not publish. Publishing is a separate action a person takes, and it is blocked while a document has unresolved suggestions.
