How to connect Webflow and publish to it

A Webflow project links Workover to the CMS collections on one Webflow site. Its items become documents you can edit in Workover, and you push them back to Webflow as staged items or publish them live. This page covers connecting a site, pushing a document, and what to do when the item changed in Webflow.

Before you start: you need a Webflow site with at least one CMS collection that has a rich text field, and either a Webflow site API token with CMS read and write access or a Webflow app connection. A project syncs one CMS, so a project already connected to WordPress or Mintlify cannot also connect to Webflow.

Connect a Webflow site

  1. In the navigation sidebar, click New Project.
  2. Enter a Title, choose the Website type, enter your Website link, and set CMS to Webflow.
  3. Click Connect to Webflow. The Connect Webflow dialog opens.
  4. Paste your token into Site API token, then click Continue. In Webflow, you create the token under your site’s Settings, then Apps & integrations, then API access. If your workspace already has a Webflow connection, the dialog skips this step. If Or connect with Webflow instead appears, you can use it to connect through Webflow rather than with a token.
  5. Choose your site under Site, then click Continue. A site API token only reaches one site, so this step is skipped when there is only one to choose.
  6. Under Collections, every collection that can sync starts ticked. Untick any you do not want, then click Sync collections.
  7. Wait for the import to finish, then click Open project. Every item in the chosen collections is now a document.

Collections without a rich text field are listed but cannot be ticked, with the reason: “No rich text field, so there is nowhere to put a document body.”

To connect an existing project instead, open it, click Project settings, and click Connect to Webflow on the Webflow card. The card only appears on a project that is not connected to WordPress or Mintlify. On a connected project, the same card has Change collections.

Push a document to Webflow

Warning: Each push sets the item’s slug from the document title. If the title no longer matches the item’s current slug, the item’s address in Webflow can change when you push.

  1. Open the document and open the Webflow tab in the editor’s side panel.
  2. If the document is not in Webflow yet, choose a collection under Publish to. With only one collection, it is chosen for you.
  3. Choose how to send it:

    • Create in Webflow (a new document) or Push to Webflow (a linked one) writes the title, slug and body to the item without publishing it. A new item is created as a staged item, not a live one.

    • Push and publish live writes the same fields and then publishes the item on your live site.

When the push succeeds, the tab shows Pushed to Webflow. and the State reads Staged (not published) or Published.

A push only sends three fields: the name (from the document title), the slug, and the body, which goes into the collection’s rich text field. Every other field on the item, such as an image, author or category field, is left as it is in Webflow.

The body is sent as it is in the editor. Links to other Workover documents are not rewritten for Webflow the way they are for WordPress, and images are not uploaded to Webflow.

If the document has pending suggestions, both push buttons are disabled until you accept or reject them.

When the item changed in Webflow

When a linked item was edited in Webflow after your last sync, the tab shows Webflow has newer changes than this document. Pushing then opens a Before you push… dialog instead of writing anything.

Warning: Push anyway, overwriting discards the edits made in Webflow, and Pull latest discards any changes in the document you have not pushed.

Choose one:

  • Pull Webflow’s version first: opens Pull the latest version from Webflow? Click Pull latest to replace the document’s body, title and status with the item’s current version.
  • Push anyway, overwriting: sends your version and replaces the changes made in Webflow.
  • Cancel: nothing is sent.

If the item was deleted in Webflow, the dialog says the item no longer exists in Webflow. Workover cannot currently recreate it from that document: pushing anyway fails with “That Webflow site, collection or item no longer exists.”

You can also pull at any time with Pull from Webflow on a linked document.

Bring in changes made in Webflow

Click Sync from Webflow in the project’s toolbar to import new items from the connected collections. For documents that already exist, a sync refreshes the title and status from Webflow. It only replaces the body of a document nobody has opened in Workover yet, so edits in an opened document are kept. To take Webflow’s body for an opened document, use Pull from Webflow.

A document’s status follows the item: a staged item reads as In progress and a published or archived one as Published. An import reads up to 2,000 items per collection, and the result names any collection it cut short or could not read.
